BERGEN
The Gateway to the Fjords of Norway.

The Bergen Region is a dynamic region of Norway and the Gateway to the Fjords – the most globally recognized trademark of this country full of natural wonders. The center of the region is Bergen, the second largest city in Norway, home to the acclaimed University of Bergen, thriving industries that include maritime, energy, subsea and fishing/aquaculture – a place to visit, work – and live.

Bergen is more than a destination – it is a way of life. City roots go back nearly 1,000 years – a city that was established just four years after what is known as the end of the Viking era. This history is evident in sights such as the 11th century city wharf that is listed on the World Heritage List.

A Natural & Cultural Wonderland
Bergen opens the door to a virtual kingdom of fjords with spectacular vistas, living cultural landscapes and nature that have been formed by the relentless action of glaciers and water over millions of years. This provides the perfect backdrop to virtually unlimited recreational activities that include fishing trips, sailing, rafting, fjord safari and glacier walks. You also find activities ranging from the fine arts to lively football matches, one of the world’s oldest symphony orchestras, concerts, theaters and a wide choice of festivals.

Taking Care of Business
In 2004, Time Magazine recognized Bergen as one of Europe´s best kept secrets, citing the region´s astounding success within aquaculture, saying “Bergen's transformation into a center of aquaculture is no surprise. The Institute of Marine Research (IMR), the second largest in Europe, traces its roots back 100 years.”
